CONSIGNMENT
SALE?
|
antages to all four. |
|
|
There are advantages and disadvantages to all four.
• Selling a collection or part of one yourself to a retail customer
can be done. You can advertise in
local papers, or specialized collector publications, or even on the
internet. You will have to provide
detailed descriptions, research and estimate prices (that may be too high
or too low), photos and
answer lots of questions. Then the real fun of collecting the payment
begins. You will wait a while to
receive the payment in the mail if you sell online. Then you will be
tasked with packaging, shipping
and insuring the sold item(s). If the buyer elects to return the time or
it arrives damaged, the whole
process starts again.
There is of course the issue of advertising what you have and
letting scrupulous individuals know
what you have and where you live. If this appeals to you, you will
do just fine..
• Selling to a dealer or firearms broker. This is a fast and easy
way to unload your items. As a rule
dealer and brokers pay 35%-60% of what they are going to expect to sell
it to their clients or to the
general public. Example: If you have a Colt worth $1,000.00 many dealers
will pay you $300.00 to
$600.00. You have to hope you are negotiating with an honest dealer. You
could however obtain offers
from several dealers and get an average on pricing.
Be advised, dealers often will want to "cherry pick" and only buy
the best items, leaving you stuck
with the less desirable pieces.
• Consignment - Most dealers will charge a commission (usually 20%)
based on the actual selling
price. It’s true, you don’t get paid until the item sells, but you have
the potential to get a lot more for
your item. Example: If the dealer sells the “Colt Revolver” for $1,600.00
- $1,300.00 the owner would
get $1,280.00 - $1,040.00. Is the extra amount received worth the wait
and the risk of having the item
in the dealer's possession while it is being sold? Many owners think so,
and your are not hassled with
the research, marketing, packaging, transfer paperwork, etc.
• Auctions - These can be a big gamble, there is no other way to say
it. A clever auctioneer with a
motivated crowd of buyers can sometimes get very good prices for even
marginal items. A poor
auctioneer or a disinterested crowd or poor weather, bad regional
economic conditions could result in
poor sales. Also keep in mined that most bidders at auctions seem to be
dealers, not collectors,
so many items often sell at wholesale (dealer) prices. I know this to be
true because I’m a dealer and
I attend such auctions.
• Many times you can expect to get about 30% - 50% less than the
actual retail selling price after
accounting for catalog fees, buyers’ premiums, sellers’ premiums, and
assorted other charges. Some
firms hold auctions frequently, others only a few times a year. Some
auction houses specialize in high
grade pieces (high profit for them) and do not bother with less valuable
pieces. Again, watch for "cherry
picking".
How to explore consignment sales with Adams Ordnance:
• Please contact us before shipping anything.
• Tell us about what you want to sell. We will discuss what you
have, possible price ranges, and whether
we are a good fit for selling your items.
• If we agree that we are a good match for your needs, we will make
arrangements to pick up the items,
or have you to ship them to us by insured UPS.
• When we receive the items we will inspect them and confirm
recommend selling prices. We will sign
a contract with you to sell them at a set price range.
Often we are able to justify higher selling prices after thoroughly
researching items. As you would expect,
we’ll start offering items at the higher end of the estimated price
range.
• Since customers are buying from us, our reputation is on the line.
We will describe items to the best
of our knowledge and belief, and will not misrepresent items for a
seller. We will not take items on
consignment at prices that we think are unrealistic or unfair to the
buyer.
• We normally contract for a consignment period of 180 days (six
months) to sell your items. This allows
time to research them properly, advertise them in catalogs or by other
means, and offer them at appro-
priate collector's shows. In our experience about 80-90% of properly
priced items will sell in that period
to time.
• We are responsible for the security and safety of your items while
in our possession, and will give them
the same secure storage as our own inventory, covered by insurance for
the consigned value.
• When your item is sold (customer has paid for it, it has been
delivered, we will send you a check for
the sales price less the commission. Our normal commission rate is 20% of
the actual selling price.
(On some less expensive or slow moving items it may be higher, on some
quick moving or high value
items it may be less.
• We will gladly provide names and phone numbers of previous
consignment customers as references.
Remember, there is no charge unless your item sells.
